Resolve the Application error “The memory could not be read”

January 23rd, 2010 by admin

Is it the case that when you try to log on to the local console of your Windows 2000-based computer, you receive the following error message: The instruction at ‘<address>’ referenced memory at ‘<address>’. Application error “The memory could not be read”.

Click OK to terminate the program. And when you click OK, your computer restarts. However, after many logon attempts you might actually be successful. Note that this error message may also occur if you log on by using a Terminal Services client. The reason for the Application Error message – ” the memory could not be read” is that the OS allocates a smaller buffer for the string length than the maximum permitted length. When the data is larger than the buffer size, the Winlogon service stops unexpectedly and your computer generates the error message. However, this problem has resolved in the latest service pack for Windows 2000 and hence to resolve it, install the latest service pack.
