The singular form of algae is alga, but these plants are so rarely found in singular form that they are most often used in their plural form– algae. When looking at green “scum” in a body of water, chances are very, very good that it is one of thousands of types of algae. Algae in ponds is considered to be a simple plant made up of one or two cells using photosynthesis (sunlight, water and carbon dioxide) to make its own food. Virtually all water contains algae, even the most purified drinking water. Algae is at the bottom of almost all marine food chains, meaning that it sustains life for countless species of fish and wildlife.
